The William H. Block Building is located in the Washington Street-Monument Circle Historic District, situated in the central downtown area of Indianapolis. The William H. Block building was originally a significant department store, designed and completed in October 1911 with 8 stories and a basement and sub-basement. In 1934, a comprehensive modernization program was accomplished which altered the ground floor interior and exterior, changing the classical design of the 1911 section into the present-day style of Art Deco. The Block family sold the store and it eventually closed in 1993. Following this change of ownership the building went through a historical rehabilitation. Today the William H. Block building continues to be a prominent site in the Washington Street-Monument Circle Historic District. in addition to being an architectural contribution to its historic fabric.
